Overnight closures for routine maintenance and A428 Scheme Improvements

A428 between Wyboston roundabout, Cambridge Road roundabout and Caxton Gibbet roundabout between Thursday 9 May – Wednesday 15 May 2024

What is happening

Before we can begin working on the new junction and slip roads at Cambridge Road in mid-May, we need to install a 40mph speed restriction, roadworks signs, safety barriers, narrow lanes, speed cameras and CCTV.

I am writing to let you know that we will be closing the A428 between St Neots and Caxton Gibbet to undertake this preparation work.

For safety reasons the works will be carried out under overnight closures at the following locations:
• Wyboston/Crown roundabout to Tithe Farm/Cambridge Road roundabout, Thursday 9 8pm – Friday 10 May 5am. (routine maintenance via National Highways East Ops )
• Tithe Farm/Cambridge Road roundabout to Caxton Gibbet roundabout, Monday 13th – Tuesday 14th – Wednesday 15th May, 8pm – 5am. (scheme works)

To avoid closing the road multiple times, we are collaborating with the National Highways East maintenance team.

Why is this restriction needed?

Once complete, the narrow lanes will be in place until spring 2025 and will allow additional space at the side of the road to provide a safer working environment for our workforce to complete the following:
• Completion of earthworks embankments next to and across the existing road.
• Construction of new junction slip roads.
• Road surfacing works.
• Road construction including kerbs and footpaths.
• Completion of new drainage ditches, gullies, and piped networks.

We will do our best to complete the work as quickly as possible, however all dates are subject to change due to weather and operational requirements.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience you may experience during the upcoming roadworks.

Please remember:
• Traffic approaching the closure location shortly before 9pm is likely to be subject to the diversion while the closure is put in place.
• We always try to stick to timings; however, these closures may be amended due to poor weather or operational reasons.
• You can get real-time traffic information via www.trafficengland.com.
