Distraction Burglary

POLICE are issuing a warning following reports of offences of distraction burglary within the area.

Distraction burglary is where the offenders trick the occupant or distract them, allowing the other person they are working with to gain access to the property and commit burglary. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to distraction burglary.
In the recently reported cases, the offenders purport to work for the local council, and have forced their way into the victim’s property when the door has been answered.

Call police on 999 immediately if you believe this type of offence
to be in progress.

If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. Check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from i.e. gas, electricity, water and police. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider – Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.
